Aegis of Valor doubles the LP you gain when you win a ranked game. Riot's MMR page calls it “a special feature that doubles the LP you gain upon winning” and says “you can earn it by playing autofilled games as well as picking priority roles”. Since patch 26.15 (July 2026) it works on wins only: it no longer softens a loss. It changes your LP, not your hidden rating.
How you earn Aegis of Valor
Riot's MMR, rank and LP page (28 May 2026) gives the rule in one sentence: “You can earn it by playing autofilled games as well as picking priority roles.” Autofill is the case everyone knows: you queued for one role and got another. Priority roles are the second route; Riot's page does not define them further, and we don't guess at which roles count on a given day.
The patch 26.15 notes (28 July 2026) add the condition that was dropped: wins now “award double LP without requiring a minimum mastery score”. Earlier, Riot's December 2025 ranked post had introduced Aegis for autofilled games with a mastery score of C or higher. So the current rule is: get Aegis through autofill or a priority role, win, and the LP is doubled, with no performance threshold.
What it does on a win and on a loss
| Riot text | On a win | On a loss | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| /dev: Ranked 2026 (1 Dec 2025) | Double LP | Full protection from the LP loss | Autofilled game, mastery score C or higher |
| MMR, rank and LP (28 May 2026) | “Doubles the LP you gain upon winning” | Not mentioned | Autofilled games and priority roles |
| Patch 26.15 notes (28 Jul 2026) | Double LP, “without requiring a minimum mastery score” | “Will no longer reduce LP losses” | Wins only, “to remove mixed incentives” |
The three texts describe the feature differently because it changed between them, and the newest one is the one in force. Riot's reasoning in 26.15: letting Aegis protect a loss created “mixed incentives”, so it can now only be “cashed in” on a win. On a loss you lose your normal LP; what happens to the Aegis itself in that case, Riot's notes don't say.
Why it is not an MMR change
A game that gives you +44 instead of +22 looks like the system suddenly rates you higher. It doesn't. Every Riot text about Aegis speaks of LP: double LP, LP protection, LP gains. Your matchmaking rating still moves by the result of the game, as it does for every win, and Riot keeps it hidden. The March 2026 dev post even ties Aegis to the Mastery system rather than to rating, saying better Mastery scoring “should help make the LP gains and loss protection from Aegis of Valor more consistent for everyone”.
That matters when you read your gains. Riot's rule of thumb is that gains bigger than losses mean your MMR is above your rank; a single doubled game is not evidence of that, and neither is the normal gain after it. Take the Aegis games out of the picture first, then look at the rest: why LP gains differ per game covers the three cases Riot describes.
How to spot it in your LP history
The client shows the LP of your last game and nothing before it, so an Aegis win is easy to see once and hard to find later. In a list of LP per game it stands out: one win worth roughly twice your usual gain, in a game where you were autofilled or took a priority role, with normal gains before and after. Two such games in a week can make your other wins look small by comparison, which is the most common reason players think their gains “dropped” when they didn't.
A short example. Say your wins have been worth about +22 and your losses about −21 for a month, the “rank and rating are even” case from Riot's page. A week that reads +21, −20, +44, +23, −22 has one Aegis win in it and nothing else unusual; your rating did not jump at game three and settle at game four. Reading the +44 as a signal and the +23 as a “drop” is the mistake to avoid. Take the doubled game out, and the week says what the month said.
LazyElo records your rank after every game it syncs and lists the LP each game gave, per queue, with your sessions around it. A doubled game sits in that list with its date and result, which is the easiest way to see doubled games in your LP history. The app shows LP only; it never estimates MMR.
Related LP modifiers in Riot's list
Aegis is one of a handful of things that change your LP without changing what the game result says about you:
- Consolation LP. Riot's MMR page refunds LP after a loss when a teammate who was not in your premade is reported and verified for AFK, leaving or intentional feeding, as long as you lost LP (not at 0 LP in division IV). There is a weekly cap Riot doesn't number.
- Loss prevention. A system-wide problem can trigger “Loss Prevented”, which Riot only switches on for an issue that hits many players at once; it also caps LP gains in those games.
- Dodges. 5 LP for a first dodge, 15 after that, 20 in the apex tiers, with no game played (Riot's queue dodging page).
- Leaver penalties. Going AFK can cost LP in that game and the one after it.
None of these is MMR either. For the tiers, divisions and what 100 LP buys you, see League of Legends ranks explained.
Questions
Does Aegis of Valor work on a loss?
Not anymore. Riot's patch 26.15 notes say it 'will no longer reduce LP losses in the case of defeat' and that you 'can only cash in Aegis of Valor in games you win'. Before July 2026 it could give either double LP or full protection from an LP loss.
Does Aegis of Valor change your MMR?
Riot describes it only in terms of LP: double LP on a win. Nothing on its pages says it touches your matchmaking rating, and a doubled gain does not mean your MMR jumped. Your next game's LP is the signal for that. See LP gains and hidden MMR.
Does Aegis of Valor stack?
Riot's pages don't say, so we don't either. They describe how you earn it (autofill and priority roles) and what it does (double LP on a win), not how many you can hold or whether it expires.
